How Public Healthcare Gave Me a Stroke

At this point in my life, I walk with a cane, my memory is intermittent at best, and I’m subject to weekly blood tests among a constant stream of other sorts of medical checkups. The cause? A stroke suffered at the hands of the socialized healthcare in Canadian hospitals.

Had a doctor had time to take my case seriously; or, had I been able to get basic diagnostic testing done in a timely manner; or, had the triage nurse not been on lunch break when I needed her; or, had I been prescribed the simple medication that would have prevented by body from forming blood clots; or, had I been informed of risks and told of things I could do to change what lay ahead, this may never have happened. One things for sure, public healthcare failed me at every turn…and I almost died because of it.

Exactly one year ago, on August 8th, 2009, I was admitted into Ottawa General Hospital with an ischemic stroke, caused by a cardioembolism (blood clot) in my left anterior cerebral artery. The tiny little clot that changed my life was a by-product of a heart condition called atrial fibrillation (A-Fib, for short) that I had been diagnosed with about a month prior.

To this date, doctors are still dumbfounded about how someone in their 20′s who rarely drinks and has never done drugs acquired A-Fib in the first place, but I accept that flukes happen. I was having a quiet evening with a friend when I felt my heart racing, accompanied by serious chest pains and difficulty breathing. After several hours of attempting to convince myself that nothing was wrong, I called a public health service called Telehealth Ontario (possibly one of the most useless government services in existence) to see if I had a cause for concern. The official recommendation from Telehealth was go to the hospital by ambulance.

Upon arriving to the hospital, I was brought right into the emergency room and received in my care a level of quality that I have no complaints about. After several attempts to bring my heart back to ‘sinus’ rhythm, my doctors succeeded and I was discharged with follow-up. This was where the problems started. I was given an ‘urgent’ referral to a place called the Acute Cardiac Referral Clinic at the affiliated University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

No one was able to give me an accurate estimate on how long I’d be waiting. That being said, I wasn’t too worried, because I accepted the explanation of the doctor that, “this was probably just a one-off. You’re young, you’ll be fine.” I was going to be fine, no need to worry! For my own sake, I didn’t do much Googling of the affliction that I had been diagnosed with because I knew that I’d likely find some bizarre case of someone dying from it in some African village 50 years ago. The last thing I wanted was to be one of those patients who starts off a medical consultation with “I read on the internet somewhere that…” or anything similar.

I was a little disturbed that a heart issue with no identifiable randomly appeared, but I wasn’t worried. However, only four days later, I noticed the same symptoms as I was on my way to work. By the time I got to my office on Parliament Hill, I sunk into a couch, clutched my chest and called security to bring down an oxygen tank. I ended up having an ambulance bring me to the hospital yet again, less than a week after my most recent visit.

Once again, I received reasonable care according to my imminent needs, but was given little confidence that I’d be looked after in the long-term. Over a five-week period, I ended up in the emergency room four times with the same symptoms, each time being told that it was either a ‘fluke’ or ‘coincidence.’ One doctor’s brilliant advice was that it was ‘weird.’ Despite this issue only getting worse, my urgent referral to the Acute Cardiac Referral Clinic wasn’t available any quicker. I was able to get in during the first week of August. I wasn’t permitted to see a cardiologist, merely a technician who wasn’t permitted to tell me anything until a cardiologist had a chance to look at the tests “whenever he gets to it.”

Amusingly, on the last of these four visits, the doctor said to me, “If you were older we’d be worried about you having a stroke. But that’s not going to happen.”  Less than a week later, I proved him wrong.

This part is truly a comedy of errors. Feeling my heart condition start acting up, I decided that I would go to the hospital just to make sure. It was the sunny afternoon of Saturday August 8th. Upon arrival to the Ottawa General Hospital (I should have been requesting frequent flier miles,) I proceeded to the emergency room and went to the reception desk. The rather miserable looking woman asked, “Are you here to see a doctor or a patient?” I was feeling a little dizzy at this point, and I didn’t notice that I had been dragging my right leg. I told her that I wanted to see a doctor, and she informed me that I needed to see a triage nurse first. The catch? The triage nurse was on lunch and wouldn’t be back for another 45-50 minutes. The clot had already made its way to my brain by this time. Every passing minute was leading to less and less strength on my right side. Unfortunately, my brain was too messed up to know that anything was happening.

The triage nurse arrived shortly before 2:00pm and motioned me in. By this point, I was barely able to use my right arm and was dragging my right leg from the waiting area to her chair. Every other time I had been sitting there, they had done routine questions that would rule out whether or not I was having a stroke. She didn’t ask those this time, I must have been fine then! I was then downgraded from emergent to the hospital’s clinic, inappropriately called the Urgent Care unit. When I got there and an electrocardiogram (ECG) was done, I was quickly brought into the emergency room, and from there I was quickly brought into the emergency room and treated for a stroke. To put things into perspective, with ischemic strokes there is a 4.5-hour window in which a miracle drug can be administered to break up the clot. I received this with 13 minutes to spare.

One mistake at one hospital is unfortunate. Two mistakes at two hospitals is a little fishy. However, a series of screw-ups and neglect that leads to a preventable tragedy raises enough cause to question the efficiency of the system itself. I’m not the only one who’s experienced this. This saga through the public healthcare system changed my life forever. I thank God it didn’t take my life away altogether.

Uhh, We Can't Afford This Stuff…

…in an election year.

ABC News reports:

President Obama has had two major messages for Congress in recent months: Keep the focus on jobs and the economy, and get serious about runaway spending.

His problem now is that they’re starting to listen to him on the second point — at the expense of the first.

In a major shift in congressional politics, Democrats have developed a severe case of sticker shock, just as many of their colleagues press to prime the pump of the economy in time for the mid-term congressional elections.

Now, even popular initiatives with widespread support — notably an extension in unemployment benefits for those who have been out of work for more than a year, plus $50 billion the White House is asking for to help avert state layoffs of teachers and law enforcement officials  are stalled inside Congress.

Democrats are between Barack and a hard place. On the one hand, the only reason they are ever elected is to loot the treasury and put as many people on the government dole as possible. On the other hand, with a national debt of over $13 trillion, there is no more money to give away.

After Obama put his “laser-like focus” on job creation, unemployment soared to 10%, where it has remained since the passage of the porkulus bill. Since then, Obama has also passed the largest entitlement bill in American history – health care. Democrats are in the fast lane, driving the United States off a debt cliff. For Democrats to start opposing spending bills now is laughable. While the new proposed $50 billion giveaway being bandied about in Washington ought to be stopped, there is no way Democrats can claim the mantle of fiscal responsibility in 2010.

In 2006 the Democrats ran against the big spending of George W. Bush and the Republicans. The result of their takeover has been a soaring debt, an unsustainable deficit, and a crippled economy. The Democrats have made it clear that given the power, they will spend the country into ruin. The latest hemming and hawing over spending is cynical political posturing, pure and simple.

Next Target: Food

In the April 30th episode of Strictly Right Radio Andrew and I discussed the left’s relentless assault on individual liberty. The left, and many well meaning people, may think this to be hyperbole. This is an argument I had back in March on the Michael Coren Show. The Obama administration vindicates my position every day. We have seen it in health care, banking regulations and a whole host of other fields. They want to take away your liberty. They believe, as Ronald Reagan said of the left in his day, in “abandon[ing] the America Revolution and confess[ing] that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.” The latest example of this arrogance of power comes in a pending attempt to control what children eat.

The White House warns,

“The childhood obesity epidemic in America is a national health crisis.” (of course – everything is a Crisis!)

The review by the Task Force on Childhood Obesity says one out of every three children is overweight or obese. The task force is a key part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to solve the problem of obesity within a generation. President Obama ordered the comprehensive review of the issue…

The task force wants junk food makers and marketers to go on what amounts to an advertising diet. It says media characters that are often popular with kids should only be used to promote healthy products. If voluntary efforts fail to limit marketing of less healthy products to young viewers, the task force suggests the FCC should consider new rules on commercials in children’s programming. It also challenges food retailers to stop using in-store displays to sell unhealthy food items to children.

The advisory panel proposes better food content labeling on products and vending machines. Restaurants and vending machine companies are urged to display calorie counts. The experts say the FDA and USDA should cooperate with the food and beverage industries to develop a standard system of nutrition labeling on the front of packages. The study also suggests that restaurants should re-evaluate portion sizes, improve kids’ menus and list more healthy food choices.

The White House study says school systems should consider efforts to promote healthier food in cafeterias. One idea: “swap deep fryers for salad bars.”

Some of you may say ‘so what? Obesity is a problem (though to my knowledge not an infectious disease) and this sounds like a good solution.’ You may also think that laws that forbid smoking in restaurants are a step in the right direction, because smoking is ‘bad.’ This is the slow creep of tyranny. It is not within the purview of the federal government to make such decisions for us. Is smoking bad for your health? Of course it is. I must have missed the section of the Constitution that gave the government the right to determine what is ‘good’  and what is ‘bad’ for my health. Now the FCC is going to make new rules on who can run advertisements on children’s programing based on the nutritional value of the products? Forgive me, but I thought parents were responsible for what their children put in their mouths, not the federal government. If parents want to let their children get fat, so be it – what you eat is no business of the government. Kids like sugary and fatty foods – who doesn’t? The left thinks you are just the lowly hoi polloi. As George Will said, “the core of today’s liberalism [is that] the American people are such dopes they cannot be counted upon [to make their own decisions].” Whether the state’s intentions are benevolent or malicious, the fact is that every day the left is conspiring, trying to find new ways to ‘help,’ or as Cass Sunstein says, “nudge” you in the ‘right’ direction. The result is a usurpation of liberty and usually a state orchestrated, ‘unforeseen’ disaster. It is our duty to remember that “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same,” as Ronald Reagan said.

Rep. Phil Hare – Terrible Human Being

I was shocked when I saw the honesty displayed at the beginning of this video when Rep. Phil Hare (D-IL17,) said, “I don’t worry about the constitution on this” when speaking about healthcare.

Boy was I worried that we might have found the first honest Democrat.

But then, in less than 90 seconds Rep. Hare erased those fears. He stated that he read the entire healthcare bill three times.

Now, how do I know that he is a liar? He claims to have read a 8100 page bill three times in the five day period before it was passed. To put that in perspective, five days has 7200 minutes.

It’s best to end this post like the interviewer in the video: Rep. Hare, it’s time you start looking for another job!

Obama finally being impeached

Today marks a historic day in America. Not long after President Barack Obama signed into effect the biggest government takeover of the economy in the history of the United States, it seems that the unconstitutional act of Congress is being repealed today. In a joint press release from the offices of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, two historic supporters of Obama’s plans for healthcare reform, said:

The plan for health care reform was initially something that the Democratic Party had long been campaigning for as a way to ensure that the American people were well-protected. As time went on, it became apparent that this reform was not in the will of the American people at all. However, in pure stubbornness, this administration persisted in pushing the legislation forward.

At a press conference, Nancy Pelosi had a different take on the matter, however:

I don’t really believe that any one person was responsible for this. I said from the start that Americans would only be able to find out what’s in the bill if it passed. And while I was initially skeptical, Barry [Soetoro] made it quite clear that Botox procedures would be covered. It was a no-brainer at that point.

While these statements from Reid and Pelosi are in and of themselves incredible, nothing comes close to the iconic moment in history created when all Members of Congress and their staff (with the exception of Barney Frank and a young page) showed up at a rally with a petition to impeach Obama for a new subsection of the constitution called “Impeachment by Stupidity,” citing that the Stalinist approach to American governance was a trial project, and has failed miserably.

Barack Obama was unavailable for comment, though in an email from White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Strictly Right received the following comment:

Andrew, this is nothing more than 8 years of the Bush administration’s bad policies catching up on the American people. President Obama is not worried, though he’s hoping for change.

Judas Stupak's 30 Pieces Of Silver

In what is most assuredly a coincidence, the 11 Democrats led by Bart Stupak that claimed to be pro-life but still voted for Obamacare, which will fund abortions with tax payer dollars, have requested $3.4 billion in earmarks. Not to worry though, Stupak’s office assured disgusted citizens that “The congressman’s vote for health care has no connection to annual appropriations requests.” That’s right, just move along, nothing to see here. This is a glaring example of the way things work in Washington. These 11 Lapdog Democrats are spineless. Their votes were bought and paid for. In any other circumstance this would be called what it is – bribery. But not in Congress. In Congress this is business as usual. At least when people are bribed by private citizens the briber isn’t using your money!
