UPDATE – Jihad: A Love Story

We’ve known for quite some time now that people involved in the arts are the scum of the earth (I used to be an actor — trust me, I know.) This takes it to a new low though.

Shareef Abdelhaleem plotted to make money off a stock market crash that would have followed a terrorist attack in downtown Toronto.

He was jailed for his part in what became known as the Toronto 18 terror plot.

Now he is the basis for the lead character in a new play sure to be controversial for its sympathetic portrayal of a man who was convicted of planning to blow up Bay and Front Sts. with a truck bomb.

[...]

The play portrays Abdelhaleem, who was born in Egypt but has lived in Canada since he was 10, as an affable cat lover, who quotes Seinfeld and got caught up in something, almost unwittingly, without fully realizing the consequences.

“I think he’s a guy who showed bad judgment,” Frid says. “I don’t think he’s a terrorist at all.”

So, starting next week, Canada’s terrorist sympathizers (a.k.a. ‘the Left’) will be able to flock to Toronto to see Homegrown, the story of one man who likely was just misguided. Or, in the words of the playwright, happened to “[show] bad judgment.”

Tickets are available from the SummerWorks Theatre festival for only $10 (or the sacrifice of a small virgin goat to some dude named Muhammad.)

UPDATE: As I expected, the SummerWorks Theatre festival was the recipient of $90,000 in Arts & Culture funding from the government this past year.

Muslim actress nearly killed for dating a non-Muslim

By her father and brother.

I’ll confess to being a Harry Potter fan. I read the books as they came out. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon to see me waiting outside a bookstore before opening once or twice (then again, I also do that for Ann Coulter’s books.) Either way, I was familiar with Padma Patil, the character from the Potter books and movies played by 22-year old actress Afshan Azad.

Now, Azad has had to escape to London, England from an attempted murder by her 54-year old father Abdul (of course) and her 28-year old brother Ashraf.

The reason? Well, I’m sure it has nothing to do with her father and brother being Muslim and disapproving of her relationship with a Hindu man. Oh yeah, it does.

Azad has been fortunate enough to become a part of the most successful franchise in recent memory, launching a career in acting while still pursuing a university degree so that she can enter into journalism, and for doing nothing wrong she has to escape an honor killing? I thank God that she wasn’t one of the countless victims who haven’t been so lucky.

Amusingly, despite her brother’s interest in her being dead, he still wanted her was looking out for her:

We are going to get trouble from the community now. It is bad news for our safety, her safety. My younger brother is going to get harassed at college. All our family is going to be harassed by the community because of this. Her career could be ruined. When she goes to a premiere or something, they are going to ask her about this not about the film.

Jerk.

UPDATE: Apparently she has now issued a statement saying she doesn’t want them to go to jail. My guess? Coercion from relatives…that seems to be a pattern with these people. Fortunately, the prosecution is still proceeding.

Bravery or Stupidity?

Either way, I kinda like this guy.

An American man accused of trying to sneak into Afghanistan to hunt down and kill al Qaeda head Osama bin Laden has been detained by authorities in Pakistan, police said on Tuesday.

Gary Faulkner was caught in the Brumboret Valley near the border of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province carrying a dagger, pistol and night vision goggles and was being questioned in Peshawar, Chitral police chief Jaffer Khan said.

[...]

A brother of the detained man told a news conference in Colorado that Gary Faulkner was in Pakistan legally and had been there six times on a “mission” to kill bin Laden.

“He’s not crazy, he’s not a psychopath and he’s not a sociopath,” Scott Faulkner said. “He’s a man on a mission and believes that God’s got his back.”

Okay it was probably stupidity, but he was probably closer to killing Bin Laden than the military was. Killing Bin Laden shouldn’t be something that people are punished for. If this man was willing to sacrifice his life to do it, he deserves no less respect than those in the military with the same goal. He just didn’t really think things through too well.

As always, Right Girl is hilarious:

The part of this story I don’t understand is why he was arrested and detained. Carrying a sword in Pakistan is like carrying a cell phone in Toronto. There’s nothing unusual about it. And killing bin Laden – that should be everyone’s top priority, regardless of who they are. The Pakistan government claims to be on our side, yet has been as useless as our Western governments in locating and killing that beast. Instead, they have the hills marked as “secured”. Why is that? Who are they protecting – aimless wanderers like Faulkner, or more sinister elements?

Allah Says, "pour acid on your daughter"

Because what else would serve as a reasonable punishment for a girl seeing the light and marrying a non-Muslim?

Oh, apparently pouring acid on her, strangling her, then throwing her into the Ganges Canal, all in the name of Muhammad (peace be upon his rotting corpse.)

In an alleged attempted “honour killing”, a man poured acid on his daughter and threw her into a canal for planning to marry a man from another religion Tuesday, police said. The girl is in critical condition in hospital.Gulistan, 18, daughter of Asghar Ali of Charaura village in Bulandshahr district, 350 km from Lucknow, fell in love with Ravinder, 20, who ran a medical store in the village and often came to their house to deliver medicines.

The couple eloped 10 days back but were traced to Delhi and Gulistan was taken back to the village. Her parents then pretended that they had agreed to let her marry Ravinder and asked her to come with them to Delhi to buy clothes for the marriage.

Under Sharia law, a Muslim man can marry whomever he pleases, but a Muslim woman can only marry a man of the same faith, lest she be made to look like Freddie Krueger by her father. Fortunately the girl lived, though I’m guessing she’ll be thinking twice before she goes to see her Hindu husband, Ravinder again.

Bat Ye'or speaking in Canada!

From the International Free Press Society:

Bat Ye'or in Canada

Born in Cairo, Bat Ye’or found asylum in London as a stateless refugee in 1957 and became British on marriage, settling in Switzerland. Since 1971 she has written five books and scores of articles on non-Muslims under Islam, including The Decline of Eastern Christianity under Islam: From Jihad to Dhimmitude, Islam and Dhimmitude:
Where Civilizations Collide, and Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis, which described the gradual transformation of Europe into “Eurabia”. A highly sought-after speaker, she has presented at dozens of international conferences and symposiums, and given briefings to government legislatures, including the U.S. Congress.

Sam Solomon, a convert to Christianity and an expert on Islam, is a senior lecturer and research coordinator, a human rights activist and an advisor to British as well as European parliamentarians. Sam has authored a number of thought-provoking books and numerous articles on Christian Muslim relations.

“The extraordinary researches of Bat Ye’or on the Euro-Arab Dialogue, and on the growing ‘dhimmitude’ (status of submission) exhibited by the leaders and rulers of Western Europe toward Islam, have been for me an amazing revelation, one that at first I wished to deny myself, but her evidence proved overwhelming.”
La Forza della Ragione -Oriana Fallaci

“Bat Ye’or has traced a nearly secret history of Europe over the past thirty years, convincingly showing how the Euro-Arab Dialogue has blossomed from a minor discussion group into the engine for the continent’s Islamization. In delineating this phenomenon, she also provides the intellectual resources with which to resist it. Will her message be listened to?”
-Daniel Pipes

No writer has done more than Bat Ye’or to draw attention to the menacing character of Islamic extremism. Future historians will one day regard her coinage of the term ‘Eurabia’ as prophetic. Those who wish to live in a free society must be eternally vigilant. Bat Ye’or vigilance is unrivalled.”
-Niall Ferguson

“Such a Euroarabian identity is dangerous for the Jewish people. Here I agree with Bat Ye’or’s argument that Europe has been engaged in a self-capitulation to Islamist demands in the name of a misconceived multiculturalism.”
-Robert Wistrich

“Bat Ye’or is one of the only analysts in the world with the courage and insight necessary to state clearly what is happening in Europe today. Her account of the betrayal by the European powers of their own identity and history will stand for future historians as a cautionary tale of cultural suicide.”
-Robert Spencer
