Lilley: Is the Tea Party movement Canada-bound?

UPDATE: Join the Tea Party Movement of Canada on Facebook!

I’d sure say so! From Sun Media:

OTTAWA – Are Canadians getting fed up with government regulations, rules and taxes? The man behind an attempt to start a Tea Party movement in Canada hopes so.

This past weekend hundreds of thousands of Americans flocked to Washington for a rally about taking back their country. They came to hear speakers such as Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, and although not explicitly a Tea Party event, the crowd drew many from the movement that calls for government to get government off the backs of hard working people.

Andrew Lawton wants to bring that spirit to Canada.

Lawton, a conservative-leaning activist from London, Ont., is one of the organizers behind an online attempt to start a Tea Party movement in Canada.

Starting with a Facebook group, Lawton says there are plans for rallies this fall in Ottawa and Quebec City. Other cities may be added.

There are differences between the two countries Lawton acknowledges but adds the basis of the movement is the same.

“The issues differ but the ideology stays the same. Advocating for smaller government, freedom and letting people live their own lives.”

“One person came up to me recently and said that freedom is an American value,” said Lawton. “That’s not true. It’s an attitude I want to change.”

People on both sides of the political spectrum have expressed skepticism about the idea of a Tea Party Movement in Canada. Those on the Left think that it’s an avenue for fascist, racist, right-wingers to spout their hatred. Even some on the right are too worried about the “optics” of utilizing an American concept to advocate for Canadian values. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, conservatism and liberty are not American concepts; they are basic, fundamental truths that people in any country should embrace.

A prominent Canadian Conservative Party blogger and I had an exchange this afternoon where he was suggesting it be called something else. Why? People know and understand what the Tea Party movements stands for. As Kathy Shaidle said, “I envision the usual Canadian ‘conserv.’ bores/wonks bickering about terminolgy as excuse to avoid action.”

Stay tuned for some big announcements in the coming weeks!!

  1. If there is a tea party rally in Ottawa I would most certainly attend….. especially if said rally was held at Ottawa University.

  2. America is in its worst state since the depression era and you want to follow in their footsteps? Turn off the US news shows and pay attention to Canadian politics instead. Look at how pointed your taglist is, there is so little Canadian about it! I hope, for the good of my beloved Canada, that you’re only saying these things as satire. At the very least, trying to show how ironic such a movement would be in Canada.

  3. Yeah, all those government taxes that pay for free healthcare, free education, and social assistance for over half of the Canadian population are just so terribly evil.

You are free to move to the United States if you want to pay for all those things if you hate socialism that much.

  4. We can only hope that more & more Canadians will have passion like this one day!

“ProudCanadian” is clearly in deep denial that his Messiah, Obama, has followed the Socialist Playbook and gotten America into incredible trouble. He’s of the ilk that screams, “More of the same, more of the same!”

As for “Cathy C”, I’ve never seen someone use the word “free” so much and have absolutely no concept of where those tax dollars come from. Probably a campaign worker for Jack Layton & Olivia Chow!

  6. You can attempt this entertaining project of yours, but I would conjecture that in general Canadians are far too pragmatic to attach themselves to a nebulous and vacuous movement that doesn’t really stand for anything except for throwing around inflammatory comments about those whom they dislike. Where was the Tea Party movement during the days of G.W.B.??? with the ridiculous deficits and government largess his administration was responsible. Oh yeah I forgot – tax cuts, war, and fear mongering make running deficits okay. As far as I’m concerned, Tea Partiers are nothing but a bunch of parochial, opportunist hypocrites. Best of luck bringing this nonsense to Canada.

  7. Justin,
Between your superfluous pejoratives you have brought up a point the left loves to make: where was Tea Party under George W. Bush? You then use the fact that it did not exist to point out the undeniable duplicity of the Tea Party. There is a small problem with your position: despite the general consensus, spending under George W. Bush was infinitesimal compared to Obama. The Washington Post has a chart that compares the two here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2009/03/21/GR2009032100104.html. As you can see, President Bush’s big spending does not hold a candle to the spendthrift ways of Chairman O.

  8. Your argument about Bush’s spending is so dishonest that I’m shocked that you don’t actually glow in the dark.

Almost unsurprisingly, your chart doesn’t show Bush’s spending relative to presidents Johnson through Clinton. Yes, Obama has spent more money than any before him. But so did Bush, where was the marching then?

I remember a time when eliminating the Department of Education was in the platform. Where where you when Bush more than doubled it?

Justin may not be Right, but he sure as hell isn’t wrong.
