The Newest Domestic Security Threat: Drowning Immigrants

As Lorne Gunter says, “OMG! Say it isn’t so!”

A new study shows that immigrants are more than four times more likely to be unable to swim than people born in Canada. As a result, they are at a greater risk for drowning, according to the Ipsos Reid Public Affairs study commissioned by the Lifesaving Society. The findings released on Thursday confirm what drowning-prevention experts have suspected for nearly a decade, Lifesaving Society public education director Barbara Byers said.

“For the first time, we have scientific, evidence-based data to support what our hypothesis was: that new Canadians have a higher drowning rate,” she said.

This goes right into the “issues I don’t care about” stack, in case anyone was wondering.

  2. It’s a seriously stupid study. How is it in any way shape or form suprising that people who have never lived or played near water, know little english, and often believe they know better than signage, fail to survive typical Canadian water conditions. ? ? Talk to immigration Canada. Remind them as well as don’t carry guns, don’t kill because your …honour was tainted, don’t discriminate, don’t ignore language laws, don’t ignore health laws, they must also say don’t forget to read your safety around water manual! Ah I think I figured out why Andrew keeps of around. I say the nasty. :) i was once an immigrant, I had rules to follow. I lived on an island, logic dictates I should know how to swim. If you go in the water you prepare to float or drown. Period!

  3. Have you met immigrants?! I’m sorry but they hate each other and us lots of times. I LOVE A LOT OF PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT COLOURS, RACES, AND RELIGIONS,BUT. They are the first to tell me who they hate! Watch some Russell Peters man. The truth is out there. It’s like calling a Scot an Englishman. Same to some, very different to a Scot! Take a chill … See Morepill and realize the real world. Someday I may tell you of my utopia but currently we’re stuck in Canada. It’s not perfect but it sure tries, and I love it for it.

  6. I enjoy how casually they make the jump between “can’t swim” to “risk of drowning”. Avoiding deep water isn’t an option?
