'Stimulus' Obamanation

So we have a choice to make. We can once again let Washington’s bad habits stand in the way of progress. Or we can pull together and say that in America, our destiny isn’t written for us but by us. We can place good ideas ahead of old ideological battles, and a sense of purpose above the same narrow partisanship. We can act boldly to turn crisis into opportunity and, together, write the next great chapter in our history and meet the test of our time. So said President Obama in his loquacious Washington Post editorial.

From the pen of The One, the American people will undoubtedly be imbued with a sense of fear. The One proclaims that should the ‘stimulus’ package not be passed immediately America will instantly be relegated to third world status. This is classic socialism – operating in a constant state of panic, in order to pass a radical agenda that, given a closer look, the people will reject.

Any analysis of this enormous pork laden omnibus-spending bill will reveal that economic recovery is a secondary objective at best. Pardon me if I don’t see how $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts, $650 million for digital TV coupons, including $90 million to educate “vulnerable populations” or $600 million to convert federal auto fleet to hybrids is going to kick-start the economy. These of course, were just random examples of the profligate expenditures in the obscene bill in its current formation. In fact, the bill is chockfull of worthless pet projects like these.

President Obama chided his critics for believing in “failed theories” like tax cuts. He then went on to write about energy independence and health care expenditures. Each one of these must be addressed. First, the media persist in comparing The One to famous past presidents (Lincoln, FDR and JFK, although I prefer Jimmy Carter and BJ Clinton comparisons). It is time for President Obama to take a page out of President Kennedy’s playbook and cut taxes! America’s corporate taxes are the second highest in the industrialized world, and the current income tax act is approaching 10 million words. The man now charged with running the IRS couldn’t even understand the law! Second, we hear this talk of energy independence. This coming from the man who has just banned more domestic drilling in Utah, and will be responsible for the coming spike in gas prices. As well, don’t forget The One promised to kill the domestic coal industry. I wonder how he plans to keep the Oval Office at a blistering 78 degrees when all we have are hamsters running in circles to power the country. Third, health care. As a Canadian, let me assure every American: if you think health care is expensive now, just wait until it’s free.

It’s nice to see that House Republicans did the right thing and voted unanimously against the ‘stimulus’ abomination. Let’s just hope that the Senate Republicans grow a spine and do the same. If so the Great Republic may not be lost – we could have another Republican Revolution in 2010, à la 1994.

UPDATE: This vote will be close. Apparently Susan Collins will not be supporting the bill. The only two potential sell-outs are reported to be Arlen Specter Olympia Snowe.
UPDATE: Looks like the Rockefeller Republicans have sold us out…again.
The Benedict Arnolds: Snowe, Collins Specter.
The Price:  I’m now reading that the bill will be restored to its full value of $920 billion.
When the United States looks like the 1920s Weimar Republic, we’ll know who to blame.
